New V.E.S.T. Information

This year with the VEST course is all about trying new methods to find the best and most efficient method to offer the VEST course to our young riders.

That being said, we have already stumbled across a few problems with the registration. Some folks are willing to make a long drive for the course, but can’t always make it to the registrations. So, we have devised a plan that may better accommodate everyone. Instead of having an in person registration, we have decided to set a registration deadline of 15 days prior to the course. We would like people to call or email the VASA office to fill out the paperwork and then the office will mail the necessary materials to the students. At home study and completion of homework is still mandatory. A deadline of 15 days prior to the course allows enough time for us to process the paperwork, and mail the materials while still allowing ample time for students to study. We are hoping that this new method will increase participation, as well as cut costs. Postage for mailing the materials is still less costly than mileage and time for staff to complete in-person registrations. At this time, the VASA office still needs to be the sole distributor of the materials, simply so we can keep track of the registrations during this trial period.

I’d like for you all to relay this message to your members to make everyone aware. For those of you who already have posters advertising in-person registrations, let me know and I will make you new ones. So here is the list of set VEST courses along with the new registration deadlines. Please let me know if you have any questions:

Rutland (Location TBA): Registration Deadline: 4/13/12 Course: 4/28/12

Milton (Milton Fire Station): Registration Deadline: 4/27/12 Course: 5/12/12

Barre: (VASA HQ): Registration Deadline: 5/11/12 Course: 5/26/12

Please contact me if you have any questions about the new registration process. Thanks everyone!

March 24, this Sat. Trail Work

It looks like the weather will be good for trail work this coming weekend and with the recent announcement of BMAC acquiring additional trails, we'd like to get a good head start on trail clean up of existing trails.

Saturday, 9:30 am at the BMAC trailhead on West Rd., we will try to leave a list of trail project spots on the Kiosk.

Main objective is clearing trails of branch debris, trimming excess branches, clearing water bars of leaves and making sure there is a channel to move excess water out of the water bar. In the area of Farrell's Lookout there are several trees down which means people are needed to help move branches and move cut logs.

In general with trail work, if it's a small job of pruning or clearing a water bar, when the first one stops, the rest pass and continue to the next spot needing attention.

Helpful tools, hoe, small shovel, pruners, clippers, chainsaw if you are proficient handling one. And necessary protective gear, gloves and bug/tick spray, etc. The bugs and ticks are out, there wasn't sufficient freeze to kill them off this winter.

Also, please be aware that forest floor conditions are dry.

Bring water/soda and lunch or snack and it is handy to have your cell phone. And a camera, we had some sneak peeks of some great views without the trees leafed out, last Sunday doing trail evaluation.

If we have a good turn out a lot can be accomplished in just a few hours. But if you can only offer an hour or 2, it will be appreciated and keep track of your time, 10 hrs. of volunteer trail work this season entitles you to a $10 work voucher off next yrs. VASA membership.

As always safe trails.
Connie
