BMAC 2012 Riding Season

It's going to be a great riding season!

In less than 3 days our new club President, Rusty, has organized his staff and is enlisting the help of members who want to move this club forward. So much has already been started in planning and actual details confirmed to make sure we have a smooth running, fun riding season ahead of us.

Monday, Rusty and his alternate delegate Dave Brown attended the VASA BoD monthly meeting which had guest speaker, VT. Lt. Governor Phil Scott who is an advocate for legal ATV riders. Rusty will be communicating details of the Lt. Gov.'s views at our next monthly meeting March 11 at the Ira Fire House.

They also picked up BMAC's 2012 membership materials and Rusty has assembled a crew to get the membership packets put together this coming weekend and should be at the dealers by Tuesday Feb. 21. Monday is Presidents Day and they might not be open.

As of right now, Trail Coordinator & Vice President Jack Johnson reports that Ted's MT. is open (and Landowner Ted approves). Farrell's MT and the rest of BMAC trails are closed due to iced trails at the top of the MT. and trail work needed to be done on the rest before opening.

If,...and we do mean if, the weather stays mild and cooperates, we are planning a large scale trail work weekend towards the end of March, with landowner permissions.
Come to the March meeting and keep an eye out for email notices and/or contact us if you're willing to help.

One last note, after the club meeting Sunday, Ted informed us that he had obtained another landowner's permission for trails on new land and we already have appointments set up to approach other landowners for permission of trails.

This looks to be an exciting riding season as we move forward with VASA's ideals of extending trails and providing safe, family riding. Come join us and make this happen.

An election is about choice and choosing the right individuals for the right job. I have done my tour of duty as secretary and followed through with a full term. I have carefully weighed my options and the pro's and con's of being an officer with BMAC. I feel the club would benefit with a new direction and attitude. With that being said, I have decided to run for President of BMAC. I have pre selected my running mates to form my own staff. A staff that will work together and represent the club in a professional manner and help move our club forward. The candidates are as follows

BMAC Monthly Meeting 2-12-12

I'd like to confirm the date and time of BMAC's February meeting will be Sunday February 12th. at 1:00 PM. Meeting will be held at the Ira firehouse, located on rt. 133 just south of Ira. Please bring your own folding chair as there are very few chairs. The Ira Volunteer Fire Department has generously allowed our club to hold our meetings there and will be making accommodations for each meeting.
This months meeting will consist of any last minute nominations. Immediately following will be the ballot voting of 2012 BMAC officers. All positions are still open for nominations to run for election. As of today officer candidates are as follows.

Vise President-Jack Johnson is running for election.
Treasurer--------Tabatha Viger is running for reelection.
Secretary--------For the good of the club, I have decided to run for reelection and promise to seek out computer tutelage where needed.

BMAC will be starting off the 2012 season with a new place for monthly
club meetings. One of our land owners who also is asst. Fire chief, Ted
Sheloski and associates has agreed to let BMAC use the Ira Firehouse,
located off Rt. 133 on toppin rd. just south of Ira. The first meeting
is slated for Sun. January 8th at 1:00pm. Nominating committees and
members will be nominating new officers and board members. Elections
will follow at February's meeting. Looking forward to seeing some new
faces and new ideas this year.
Also if your able. Please bring a nonperishable food donation for
the West Rutland Food Shelf. Thanks.

Wed night forest fire

We would like to personally thank all ATVers that answered our emergency call late last night to assist our fire dept's. who were fighting the fire in ChippinHook on Walker MT.. And those who stayed through out the night and today transporting fire fighters and equipment to hotspots. The fire lit up the MT. but the head lights of all the ATV's lit up the MT. as well. Many acres were affected, but because of the ATVers it enabled our brave Fire Depts. to safely access, control and put out the fire in the dark of night where no trucks could go.

I have received an email today with deep appreciation and thanks from the Clarendon Fire Dept. and personally from Ted Sheloski.

And at this time I'd like to update our BMAC phone call list of ATVers willing to be called by phone for emergency response. This doesn't mean a firm commitment to be there, but if the circumstances are right for you, you'll be aware of when help with your ATV is needed. What I need is names and phone numbers.

FYI, I have been in discussion through these last few years with my local VET, Janet Carni explaining our training drills with local emergency reponse. The day after Irene she, in her position with EMS requested that the Red Cross allow BMAC to offer our clubs ATV services. They had to get permission from the national Red Cross headquarters. It took 3 weeks after our emergency of Irene flooding, but BMAC received the official word from the National Red Cross that BMAC has been approved to be called on in an emergency situation such as Irene.

Do to the effects of Hurricane Irene, the Southern Vermont Trail
Riders trails are CLOSED until further notice. Until I can get out
there to assess the damages I ask everyone to please stay off the
trails.

In the meantime, anyone who can volunteer their time and machine,
please contact local fire department or law enforcement to see where
you can help if needed.

Unfortunately, I realize it is a Holiday weekend, but our priorities
should be with helping out where we can, trail maintenance will have
to come second.

I would like to thank those of you who have already taken it upon
themselves to get out there and help with rescue, first response and
welfare checks.

BMACThe president Roy Sims and The Trail Captain, Jack Johnson is notifying all members immediately that our trails are closed until further notice. We are evaluating the damage from the hurricane that passed through our area on Sunday, and when we have more information, we will let everyone know when and if they can reopen.

WRASCALL of The West Rutland ATV Sportsman's Club's ATV TRAILS ARE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE !!!!!
Due to the direct hit that the Rutland area got from hurricane Irene, all of WRASC's atv trails are in tragic shape. Some trailheads are not even accessible and some of the trails themselves may be totally wiped off the map. We will be checking all 50 plus miles over the next few days to see what might be fixable and can be opened after they have time to dry out from the over 6 inches of rain that came with the storm. The Woodlawn/Danby trails will probably be closed at least for the rest of the season and will take extensive use of heavy equipment to repair and rebuild the trails. Our members have rode Woodlawn for over 20 years. Never have we sustained such damage in the past and never have we closed the entire Danby trail system anytime during our clubs 13 year history. We will keep everyone informed of the status of the trails as we can access and figure out if there is something we can do to reopen them or not. Please tell your fellow riders of the closure since we do not have every members email address. We do not want anyone venturing onto the trails since it is a VERY dangerous situation at this time. Also riding while the ground is still so wet can cause more damage to the trails and cause more landslides on trails that are in risk of giving way. The landowners also do not want anyone out there due to the risk of injury to anyone venturing out on the trails. EMS & other rescue personel are very busy trying to save and shore up the actual roads in the area and helping people who are stranded in their homes from washed out roads. The last thing they need is to rescue someone joy riding on damaged trails where they should not be anyhow.

Received word from VASA that VT Statues allows ATV use during emergencies, must be coordinated with local emergency management. So you can't just take off on your own. If you have an atv, contact us or your local EM, or Fire/Rescue.

ATV Assistance for flood devastation

.We have been contacted by BMAC members that are willing to help assist in our areas affected by the flood devastation and a local dealer, said that there might be snowmobile trails that are still passable up through Town and State land to get to people isolated in Mendon, Killington, etc. On Rte. 4 east out of Rutland, they are building a temp rd. for emergency vehicles to get supplies to and /or people off the MT. There could be areas all over the State that could use atv help.

Anyone willing to offer atv help please contact us and we'll setup an offer to assist to Towns and the State.

Warning ground wasp nest (?) on trail

Sunday 8-7-11, a group of riders from R.A.T.S. rode up and on Farrell's Lookout and after the first 2 machines reached the area of where the best lookout is with the table and chairs, some of the following machines where attacked by what we surmise were ground wasps. Six people got stung, some more than once. It was in the vicinity of the huge old pine, so it might be any place in that area.

Ted has been up there and drove around the area 3-4 times trying to stir them up to find their nest and had no success. If you go on Farrell's Lookout use caution, and if you spot the nest, contact us with specific local so we can take care of it. We'll keep trying to find it and give an all clear when we do.

Roy has designated this weekend a trail work weekend. This is the last weekend before BMAC's event "Freedom of the Trails" the grand opening of Yamaha Gap in appreciation to Yamaha OHV Initiative. We just need help with general trail work, clipping a few branches or berry bush shoots. Move branches and large rocks out of the trails. The trails are in good shape, but as you know the brush extends into the trails this time of year. If anyone could bring a weed whacker it would spruce up the area where the ribbon cutting will be. And could be used on the start of the 2-mile loop
As of now, we have 4 other VASA clubs that are coming to the event!
Keep track of your trail work hours by time & date and turn them into any officer. 6 hours will knock $10 off your VASA membership next year! We expect to start at 10 am each day, but come when you can, we'll probably meet you on the trails.
Sunday is the BMAC monthly meeting 1:00 pm at the trail head.

West Rutland Memorial Day Parade

The West Rutland Memorial Day Parade is Monday May 30th and we have been asked to ride in it as an ATV club. The Town of West Rutland gave us signed permission for their Clark Hill and Town forest trail, please join us in boosting their parade a little and show our responsible ATV rider club.
You must wear a helmet. Clean and shine up your machines, decorate with flags, red/white/blue materials. If you like, make up some type of "float" to have on a small trailer behind your ATV.
Meet by 9:00 am at the latest to setup your machines behind the West Rutland High School. There will be a short ceremony at 9:30 am and then the parade will start at 10:00 am, and it will take about 1/2 hour.
Please join us in honoring our Military. Let us know if you need help with decorating ideas.

It's a container that was used for gathering sap. It would be hauled on a wagon through the sugar bush and the sap buckets would be dumped into it. Now it has a modern day use, to provide water for hand washing at the Trailhead.

BMAC Rescue training drill & trail opening

Rescue training drill with surrounding areas EMS, F&R, this Sat. May 14 8:00 am. ATV's, side x side needed to transport rescue personal to scenes of different rescue scenarios. This is a hands on drill, to train how you may be of help in a...n emergency situation off road.
Examples, transporting fire & rescue to scenes of MT. fire, or disabled hunter, fisherman, hiker with rescuers needing manpower to assist with rope rescue and transport.
The training familiarizes you with the coordination needed if you ever find your self in a fire or rescue situation, or are called upon to help because you are a member of a VASA club. Even if you are limited physically, you can help by transporting.
BMAC will serve a potluck hot dog lunch, BMAC will provide hotdogs & rolls and members are bringing dishes. We even need help to serve the lunch.
Ira fire dept. will be bringing their "new" fire truck. Bring extra DOT helmets if you have them.
Trails will open May 14 after all the practice drills are completed! We try for 3 different training scenes.

Sunday May 8 is BMAC monthly club meeting at the BMAC Trailhead 1:00. Trail signs need to be put back up in anticipation of trail opening in a week or so.

Officers and trail work crew covered all BMAC trails today and many trail surfaces are too wet to permit opening of the trail system.

On the lower section of Mann MT. trail to Farrell's Lookout, officers and trail work crew will continue organized work partys for the opening of the view at the lookout and general clean up of the area. May 1 at 9:00 am. Weather permitting will continue May 7 after Green UP on the roads to the Trailhead.

Officers will determine if the BMAC trail system can be opened for next weekend May 7. The WRASC adjourning trails will still be closed until at least May 14 th. We will update when opened.

On the trail you will see new signs; What this means, no cars, jeeps, trucks, 2 wheel trail bikes allowed unless a property owner. But, legal registered, insured VASA ATV's are allowed because BMAC & WRASC has signed permission from the Towns of Ira & BMAC has from West Rutland Town. You must have a current 2011 VASA plate and year 2011 sticker on your plate and it should be fixed to the front of your ATV. The trail system is being monitored, so ride legal and respect the landowners, stay on the trail, Tread Lightly, and carry in carry out.

These pictures only show part of the BMAC Trailhead, but the snow is gone! And it's greening up!!

The Trailhead is closed and all the BMAC trails are closed. This means Ted's MT., Farrell's MT and all the class 3 and class 4. It also means BMAC's trail to Brian's Lookout on Bird MT. too.

Let the ground settle and dry. The officers are planning April 30 & May 1 for a trail work weekend. We hope to have the pavilion up by then.

In 2009, then Governor Jim Douglas finally established a rule that set up a three-trail experiment to test whether members of the Vermont ATV Sportsman's Association could successfully ride and manage ATV state lands connector trails. The Vermont ATV Sportsman's Association (VASA) and VASA's 21 local clubs had worked long and hard to prove ATVers worthy of state lands access, and it looked like the public had finally accepted ATVers as deserving at least a trial period of state lands trails use.

Now, Governor Peter Shumlin is proposing to repeal the Douglas ATV rule. Will he replace the Douglas Rule with an alternative means of state lands ATV access? Nobody knows for sure. But there is one way ATVers can let Governor Shumlin know that ATVers WANT AND DESERVE state lands access.

I Support State Lands ATV Access

Dear Agency of Natural Resources and Governor Shumlin:

I oppose repeal of the Douglas administration's ATV Rule, because I support reasonable ATV access to state land.

The Vermont ATV Sportsman's Association (VASA) and VASA's twenty-one local clubs have established a 600-plus mile ATV trail system throughout the state through building positive landowner and community relations. VASA and the local clubs have reduced ATV management problems through comprehensive programs of enforcement, environmental stewardship, landowner relations, rider education, and public outreach. While there are problem ATV riders, the same can be said for all recreational user groups.

ATV opponents make all sorts of claims that ATVs cause excessive noise, air, and water pollution, destroy ecosystems, run roughshod over land, disturb wildlife, destroy the peacefulness of the countryside, and bother other recreational groups. These claims are greatly exaggerated and not representative of use on managed trail systems.

Why would town and private landowners give VASA permission for trail use year after year if ATVs were destroying the countryside and creating massive disturbances among the local population? The reality is that ATVers are working Vermont families who care about Vermont, just like you. Some have physical limitations that prevent them from getting out in the countryside other than through the benefit of motorized recreation. The majority of ATVers are middle aged or older folks. They have a vested interest in working to minimize impact and illegal riding.

Vermont's public land was paid for by all Vermonters. Vermont includes vast acreages of state land that, in reality, can accommodate everyone. Please give ATV riders the chance to show that there's a place for them on public land along with everyone else.

BMAC tentative trail opening is May 7

Our tentative trail opening is May 7 as listed on the VASA trails opening list at www.vtvasa.org. A BMAC trail work crew will be scheduled before that.

May 7 is Green Up day, bring a garbage bag and clean up the roadsides around the Trail head. Then, the Trail Coordinator and club President will determine if the trail surfaces are ready for ATV traffic.

You have to be a 2011 VASA member to ride the VASA clubs trails.

We are now accepting pre-registration for a 2nd V.E.S.T. atv safety course provided free by VASA. Between BMAC and WRASC we already have 5 pre-registered for the 2nd class. VASA's Mount Washington Event Date has been reserved! Mark your calendars for Sunday, July 31, 2011. VASA staff will be at the base of the mountain selling tickets from 8 am until 1 PM. This is a great experience! Please see rules and specifics below.

‎1.)Speed Limit is 20-25 MPH
2.)No standing while driving
3.)No Off Road Riding! Stay on road surface.
4.)Travel in single file at all times
5.)All ATVs must have current registration and VASA membership at the ride
...6.)All participants need to purchase the proper tickets before riding up the mountain. Cost is $23 for operators and $8 for passengers.
7.)All ATV operators must have a valid drivers license.

VASA clubs, BMAC and WRASC along with Central VT Motorcycles will be sponsoring the V.E.S.T. training class for kids 12-18 which will be held at Central VT Motorcycles in Rutland VT. That age group is required by VT State law to have the training for atv operation. The course is setup and given by VASA trained instructors and is free.

If you have children in that age group that atv, they need this certification. If they are stopped and don't have this certification, there is a $400 fine. If you have friends that have children in that age group let them know of this information. The course will take place in the April-May time period, exact date soon.

"Feb 10, 2011 -- Recent heavy snows combined with earlier thaws have
brought about inconsistent ice conditions on the surfaces of lakes,
ponds and other waters in the Adirondacks and surrounding areas, the
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) warns
snowmobilers, ice anglers, skiers, snowshoers and other recreationists
today.

The weight of snow has caused ice to sink slightly forcing water from
below the ice up on to the surface. Water, in some places up to a foot
deep, may refreeze resulting in alternating layers of ice and water
all covered by a blanket of snow. The snow acts as an insulator
preventing the water from refreezing completely even in very cold
temperatures.

DEC has received numerous reports of snowmobiles and other vehicles
getting stuck in the mixture of snow, slush, ice and water. Several
snowmobiles and vehicles have broken through areas of thin ice.

These conditions also are dangerous to non-motorized recreationist
who may have a much harder time traveling across the surface of waters
becoming tired, wet and vulnerable to hypothermia.

Snow cover also prevents all recreationists from seeing areas of thin
ice, putting them at risk of breaking through to the cold waters
underneath.

DEC advises the public to be cautious and heed the following advice:

Ice will not be the same thickness on waters in the same area or even
on the same body of water. Check the depth of the ice before crossing,
in areas you plan to fish and at several points along the way as you
traverse a water body.

Be particularly cautious around inlets, outlets, near ice prevention
devices (bubblers), shoreline seeps and over moving water.

Remember, ice that holds snow may not hold the weight of a person.

DEC also advises the public to be prepared in case you or a companion
falls through the ice:

Carry ice picks to pull yourself out of the water.

Carry a 50 foot rope to pull others out of the water.

Remember Reach-Throw-Go.

Reach - Rescuers should lie on their belly, staying away from the
edge of the broken ice, and reach with a tree branch, hiking stick or
ski pole. Pull the person up onto the ice and both of you should roll
away or crawl on your belly for several feet, then crawl on all fours
until you are certain you’re out of danger. Retrace your footsteps
back to land.

Throw – Staying some distance away, throw a rope to the person,
pull the person across the ice until you are certain they are out of
danger.

Go – If you do not have the means to safely rescue the person, go
for help immediately.

A person that falls through the ice typically has two to five minutes
to get out before the cold saps their strength and concentration. Once
out move quickly to shore following your tracks onto the ice. Get warm
and dry as soon as possible. If a car or building is not close by you
may have to build a fire. Always carry fire-making supplies in a
waterproof bag in a fanny pack or in a pocket.

Being prepared and using caution is important when recreating on
frozen waters."

Trail work volunteers Dave and Bevie Radaker checked out the newly completed BMAC/VASA West Rutland Town trail which BMAC calls the 2 mi. loop, on Christmas morning. They gained accessed to the trail from their land, which is west of Man MT. and on our BMAC/VASA signed permission trails.

Pictures of the BMAC/West Rutland Town 2 mi. loop

The wet areas crossing the snow covered trail are actual water bars. In the last 2 months since the Last Hoorah, the rains had practically washed out the entire trail of the 2 mi. loop that leads up to Herrick. Our contractor did a fantastic job of saving this trail. It was a good thing we were able to get the work done before winter. Now the trail can settle and will be an excellent ATV trail next year.

A very successful VASA ATV safety course was held in Danville, VT. on Oct. 2, 2010. As of now, because of hunting seasons and holidays, VASA is postponing the courses until Spring.

Between BMAC and WRASC we have 12 signed up for the course, which is a day long classroom course, and we also have a place to hold the course, at Central VT. Motorcycles. We will send out notice after the first of the new year to refresh the list of students.

What a wonderful end of season Fall atv ride. BMAC officers wish to thank all BMAC members who helped put on this event. We thank all that attended, special thanks to our food vendor Dogs on the Run, and our dealers that supported this event, Outdoors in Motion, Tinmouth Mountain Motorsports and Tinmouth Floral. We wish to thank our entertainer Adam Springer and his grandparents Doug and Sandy Springer.
Last, very special thanks to all BMAC supporters that donated items and gift cards to the ride raffle. Funds from the raffle will go towards improving the trails for next year.
We held the food collection for West Rutland food shelf and with what was collected and the donated money, the food shelf has a good start into late Fall season.
BMAC has started a fund raiser for the Ira Fire Dept., monies were collected for a coffee and dessert table (Total soon). Our goal is to purchase an ATV rescue boggan for the Ira Fire Dept.
Riding season is at an end for BMAC with the exception of volunteer trail work crew for winter. Keep track of us on FaceBook, the Blog and the many small weekly papers.
Plans are already in the works for the opening season ride to celebrate the grand opening of Polaris Pass and Yamaha Gap. Also, organized atv pulls with the Ira Fire Dept.!
One of our Landowners is planning on opening spaces and facilities for RV campers just off the Trail Head in the Spring. Plus, the campground for tents on the top of Ted's MT.
It's already looking to be a great atv year to come, alot to look forward to at the BMAC Ira Trail Head, Where Friends Meet.

BMAC's 2nd Annual Rescue Training Drill

On Sept. 25 BMAC hosted their 2nd Annual Emergency Response Rescue drill at their ATV Trail Head on West Rd. in the West Rutland/Ira area. Their sister club WRASC also participated, along with emergency response departments from Castleton, Goshen, Ira and Timmouth fire depts.
The purpose of the drill was to train VASA-BMAC & WRASC atv club members and local emergency response teams to work together when responding to situations in remote off highway locations that would benefit having trained atv assistance. This training will be valuable in rescues of hikers, Mt. bikers, atvers, fishermen, hunters, campers and transporting fire department volunteers and their equipment to remote off road locations. Big thank you to the many VASA atver's that want training and participated on Sat.
With our sport this training is a valuable asset. If you can ride an atv or SxS and/or use a GPS, then you can benefit from this training even if you have a handicapp.
BMAC's 3rd Annual Drill is already being planned for early Spring 2011.

BMAC 2nd Annual Rescue Training Drill

Please be aware, if you weren't at the last BMAC meeting!!

There will probably be heavy equipment on the back side of Man MT. putting in a better trail with excavator, dump truck and also on other BMAC trails in the West Rutland and Ira sections of BMAC trails to ready them for the Last Hoorah.

This will not affect the Rescue Drill on 9-25. Just use caution if riding the trails this coming weekend.

We wish to ready the trails for safe riding during the open day of 10-10-10, for the Last Hoorah.

After that, BMAC trails are closed except for approved Trail Blazing and marking of "new" landowner approved BMAC/VASA trails during the Winter months. We are in the process of opening 800-900 more acres of VASA trails! This means you must commit or
possibly be available, for trail crew work. To get on the notification list, email or phone Officers of BMAC. This is for the Winter/Spring season of 2010/2011.

2nd Annual BMAC Rescue Drill
With surrounding towns, fire, rescue, and 1st Responders on 9-25-10 to be held at the Ira BMAC Trail Head starting at 8:00 am.
All VASA members are encouraged to participate. This drill will train you on how to respond during different emergencies on the trail and to assist the local EMS responders if needed during emergency situations.

Opening the Lookout

Sunday Sept. 19 we'll be starting to open the lookout on Man Mt. if anyone would like to give a little help.

These are the before pictures. Trees will come down, cut, stacked and brought to the Trail Head and campground for the Rescue Drill and Last Hoorah.
